Area Rug Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Every Room

Choosing a rug is exciting until you reach the size dropdown. Go too small and the rug looks like it is floating in the middle of the floor. Go too large and it swallows the room. The good news is that a few simple rules make the decision easy. This guide walks you through every room in the house, explains how our six sizes work in real spaces, and shares the measuring tricks interior designers use.

Our Six Rug Sizes at a Glance

Every Suupia area rug is available in six sizes, so you can choose the same design for a cozy corner or an open-plan living room:

  • 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in): entryways, bathrooms, beside a desk or as a pet mat.
  • 80 × 120 cm (32 × 47 in): bedside rugs, reading nooks and small nurseries.
  • 100 × 160 cm (39 × 63 in): kids' rooms, home offices and small living rooms.
  • 140 × 200 cm (55 × 79 in): the most versatile size for living rooms and under a full bed.
  • 180 × 250 cm (71 × 98 in): medium to large living rooms, playrooms and queen beds.
  • 200 × 300 cm (79 × 118 in): large living rooms, open-plan spaces and king beds.

How to Measure Before You Buy

Grab a tape measure and a roll of painter's tape. Measure the length and width of the space you want to cover, then mark the outline of the rug on the floor with tape. Walk around it for a day. This simple test shows you how the rug will interact with doors, furniture legs and walkways long before it arrives.

As a general rule, leave about 30–45 cm (12–18 in) of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the walls in a living room or bedroom. In smaller rooms, 20 cm (8 in) is enough. That border of visible floor frames the rug and makes the room feel larger.

Living Room Rug Size

The living room is where size mistakes are most noticeable. There are three classic layouts:

All legs on the rug

For a luxurious, unified look, choose a rug big enough for every piece of seating to sit fully on it. In most living rooms this means 200 × 300 cm or 180 × 250 cm. It works especially well in open-plan homes, where the rug defines the lounge area.

Front legs on the rug

This is the most popular and forgiving layout. The front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on the rug while the back legs sit on the floor. A 140 × 200 cm or 180 × 250 cm rug usually does the job.

Floating rug

In small apartments, a rug that sits just under the coffee table can work, as long as it is wider than the table. A 100 × 160 cm rug is a good minimum; anything smaller tends to look lost.

Bedroom Rug Size

A bedroom rug should give your feet a soft landing when you get out of bed. Position it so it extends at least 45 cm (18 in) beyond each side of the bed.

  • Twin or single bed: 100 × 160 cm placed under the lower two thirds of the bed, or an 80 × 120 cm rug on the open side.
  • Full or double bed: 140 × 200 cm, turned sideways under the bottom of the bed.
  • Queen bed: 180 × 250 cm for full coverage on both sides.
  • King bed: 200 × 300 cm.

If you prefer to see more of your floors, two matching 60 × 90 cm or 80 × 120 cm rugs, one on each side of the bed, create a neat and symmetrical look.

Nursery and Kids' Room Rug Size

Children spend a lot of time on the floor, so a generous play surface matters more than a perfect furniture layout. A 140 × 200 cm rug gives toddlers plenty of room to crawl, build and read. In a small nursery, a 100 × 160 cm rug in front of the crib or rocking chair is ideal. Browse our nursery rugs and kids rugs for playful designs in every size.

Home Office Rug Size

Under a desk, the rug should be large enough that your chair stays on it even when you push back. Measure the desk and add about 60 cm (24 in) on the sides where you sit. For most desks this means 100 × 160 cm or 140 × 200 cm. Our soft low-pile surface lets office chair wheels roll more easily than a thick shag rug.

Entryway and Hallway Rug Size

An entryway rug needs to clear the swing of the door. In most homes a 60 × 90 cm or 80 × 120 cm rug fits neatly, catching dust from shoes while adding a burst of color as soon as guests walk in.

Dining Room Rug Size

Under a dining table, chairs should stay on the rug even when pulled out. Add about 60–75 cm (24–30 in) to every side of the table. A table for four usually needs 180 × 250 cm, while a table for six or more calls for 200 × 300 cm.

Quick Design Tips

  • When in doubt, size up. A rug that is slightly too large almost always looks better than one that is too small.
  • Match the shape of the room. Long rooms suit longer rugs; square rooms can handle wider proportions.
  • Let the rug be the art. A bold printed rug works best when walls and furniture are calmer.
  • Keep it in place. Every Suupia rug has an anti-slip dotted backing that helps it stay put on hard floors.
